While you may not be familiar with the term “endodontics,” we’re pretty sure everyone has heard of root canals. We’d like to change their negative association and set the record straight: Endodontic care doesn’t cause your pain; it STOPS pain and saves teeth!
That’s important. No matter how advanced restorative dentistry is, no matter how innovative tooth replacements are, there is nothing that looks and functions like your own teeth.
According to the American Dental Association, “Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerning dental pulp and tissues surrounding the roots of a tooth. ‘Endo’ is the Greek word for ‘inside’ and ‘odont’ is Greek for ‘tooth.’ Endodontic treatment, or root canal treatment, treats the soft pulp tissue inside the tooth.” (https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/e/endodontics)This soft pulp is what becomes infected when a cavity isn’t treated, or a broken tooth allows bacteria to enter your tooth. And have no doubt – infection hurts! If you have ever experienced an infected or abscessed tooth, you know what we are talking about. Signs that you may need a root canal include:
- Ongoing sensitivity to temperature changes
- Persistent and usually severe toothache especially when biting down or chewing
- Tenderness and swelling of the gums near the painful tooth
- Discoloration of the tooth, especially a darkening of the enamel
- A pimple-like swelling on the gums that recurs or persists
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call Allen Dental Studio right away. Michael Tiplea’s same-day root canals can give you immediate and lasting relief.
