Dr. Michael Tiplea and his team at Allen Dental Studio in Allen, TX are proud to provide an extensive array of options to restore the health and appearance of your smile. For broken, badly damaged, or missing teeth, dental crowns or bridges may be the best solution. These restorations are made from beautiful, strong porcelain, which replicates the appearance and luminescence of tooth enamel. Even if you are replacing front teeth with a bridge, you can count on a dazzlingly natural looking smile.
There are two very different types of dental crowns.
- Implant crowns – These are essentially porcelain teeth, which attach to dental implants.
- White tooth caps – This is the most familiar type of porcelain crown. It may be used to repair a broken, badly decayed, or misshapen tooth. Additionally, a dental crown is added to a tooth after root canal therapy, the protect and preserve the remaining structure.
A bridge is used to replace one or several teeth. Although there are many design variations, it is usually secured at each end with prosthetic teeth in the middle, quite literally bridging the gap in your smile. There are two methods of securing bridges:
- Crown and bridgework – The traditional style utilizes dental crowns placed on remaining teeth. It is very stable and functional, but it does require altering the supporting teeth.
- Implant supported – A bridge can be supported by dental implants, with no impact to other healthy teeth. Implants help preserve bone health and closely mimic the anatomy of natural teeth, making this option preferable for many patients.
Choosing the right option, Dr. Tiplea will begin with an examination and consultation, to better understand your needs and preferences. He strongly believes in providing the healthiest solutions possible, using conservative techniques. If you have minor tooth damage, he may recommend a filling, inlay, or onlay (partial crown). In cases where the tooth structure is not strong enough to support those restorations, he will likely recommend a crown. Only if the tooth is not savable will he advise extraction, in which case he will discuss your tooth replacement options. Just call Allen Dental Studio at (469) 293-2007 to schedule.
