Here at Allen Dental Studio, we have one priority, and that is you. We want to give you not only a beautiful smile, but also a beautiful experience. Of course, we understand that most patients are less than enthusiastic about dental treatment, and the first question they ask is often, “will it hurt?” The good news is that modern dental anesthesia is incredibly effective. Coupled with Dr. Tiplea’s gentle techniques, it helps take the pain out of Allen, TX dental care.
What is dental anesthesia?
Although the term might sound a bit intimidating, anesthesia simply means something that stops you from feeling pain. We are not talking about general anesthesia, such as what hospitals use for major surgery. Because oral health procedures range from nonsurgical to minor surgery, we use local anesthesia in dentistry. A topical or injected medication effectively numbs the immediate area of your mouth, without affecting the rest of your body.
How sedation can help
Technically, sedation and anesthesia are different. However, the goal is the same, and that is to improve your comfort. Perhaps you have high resistance to dental numbing medications, or maybe you need a lengthy treatment and are concerned about dental chair fatigue. Furthermore, many people have high anxiety, which can be triggered by the mere thought of dental treatment. In these types of situations, a local anesthetic is not enough to provide a genuinely comfortable experience. Therefore, we offer three levels of sedation:
- Inhaled – Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas as it is more commonly called, is a mild sedative. It can help you relax and take the edge off your anxiety. Additionally, it has some pain-killing properties.
- Oral – This mid-level dental sedation is administered via prescription oral medication. It is stronger than nitrous and wears off gradually after your appointment.
- IV – The strongest sedative we offer, this is a popular option among extremely high-fear patients.
